Chasing the Dumble Tone on My Fractal FM9 – Work in Progress
There’s something special about the legendary Dumble sound. That smooth, dynamic response, the rich harmonics, and the way the amp reacts to every little detail in your playing.
It’s a tone that has inspired countless guitarists, including Robben Ford, Larry Carlton, and John Mayer.
And this time, I’m chasing that sound with my Fractal Audio FM9!
THE SEARCH FOR THAT DUMBLE MAGIC
One of the things I love about the Fractal FM9 is how deeply you can explore an amplifier’s character.
But creating a great Dumble-inspired tone isn’t simply about selecting an amp model and adding some reverb.
It’s about finding the right balance between gain, dynamics, EQ, compression, and that smooth, singing sustain that makes these amplifiers so distinctive.
For this project, I’m experimenting with different settings and refining the response to get closer to the feel and character I’m looking for.
A WORK IN PROGRESS
In my latest YouTube video, I’m sharing an early look at this project.
This isn’t a finished preset or a polished product demonstration. It’s a glimpse into my creative process as I experiment, play, listen, and make adjustments.
Sometimes the smallest changes make the biggest difference!
And that’s part of what makes tone design so enjoyable.

WHAT’S NEXT?
I’ll continue refining this Dumble-inspired tone on the FM9, exploring its dynamics, responsiveness, and overall musical character.
My goal is to create something that feels inspiring to play, not just something that sounds good in a recording.
As always, your feedback is welcome!
What do you think of the tone so far? And what’s your favorite Dumble-inspired guitar sound?
Let me know in the comments!
Keep playing and stay inspired!
