Whitesnake – “Is This Love” Guitar Tone

Valeton GP-200 Patch Pack

Few rock ballads are as iconic as “Is This Love” by Whitesnake, released in 1987 on the band’s self-titled album. Written by David Coverdale and guitarist John Sykes, the song became one of the band’s biggest hits, reaching #2 on the US Billboard Hot 100 and becoming a defining power ballad of the era.

The guitar tone on this track is smooth, expressive, and full of sustain—perfectly matching the emotional feel of the song. During the Whitesnake era, John Sykes was known for using high-gain amps such as Mesa/Boogie Mark-series heads and Marshalls, paired with guitars like Les Pauls and Strat-style instruments to create his massive rock tone.

To recreate this legendary sound on the Valeton GP-200, I designed a dedicated patch pack that captures the essence of the track while remaining versatile for modern players.

Included Patches

This pack includes three carefully crafted tones inspired by the song:

Clean
A warm, spacious clean tone perfect for the verses and soft melodic passages.

Crunch
A classic 80s rock rhythm tone with rich mids and tight low end for expressive chords.

Solo
A smooth lead tone with sustain and clarity, ideal for melodic rock solos.

Designed for Musicality

These patches were created to feel responsive and inspiring while playing.
They work great for:

Whitesnake covers

80s rock tones

Melodic lead playing

Classic rock rhythm guitar

Each preset is balanced to work well with typical humbucker guitars, but can easily be adapted to your own setup.
