Switching from 9s to 8s – Is It Worth It?

I’ve played .009 gauge strings for years, and recently decided to try something different: .008 gauge strings. It’s a small change on paper—but in practice, it completely changes how the guitar feels.

In this video, I document the full process: changing the strings, testing them, and sharing my honest conclusions after playing them.

🎸 What Changes When You Switch to 8s?

The most immediate difference is tension. Lighter strings require less force to press and bend, which can make vibrato, bends, and fast legato noticeably easier.

Here’s what I experienced:

✅ Easier bending and vibrato
Notes feel effortless. Wide bends and expressive phrasing require much less effort.

✅ Faster playing feels smoother
Legato runs, slides, and fast passages feel more fluid.

✅ Less fatigue during long sessions
Your hands don’t need to work as hard, especially useful for long practice or recording sessions.

⚠️ Requires a lighter touch
Because tension is lower, it’s easier to over-bend or play slightly out of tune until you adapt.

⚠️ Slight tonal difference (subtle)
Heavier strings can sound slightly fuller, especially on clean tones, while lighter strings may sound a bit brighter or more flexible in attack.

In a real-world mix, however, the difference is often minimal—amp settings, pickups, and speakers play a much bigger role.

🎧 My Personal Conclusion

Switching to 8s made the guitar feel effortless and extremely playable. The increased comfort and ease of expression were immediately noticeable.

After testing them properly, I found:

  • Playing feels easier and more relaxed

  • Bends and vibrato are more expressive

  • There’s no real downside for my playing style

This doesn’t mean 8s are better for everyone—but they’re absolutely worth trying.

Many legendary players have used very light gauges for expressiveness and control, proving there’s no “correct” choice—only what works best for you
